King, Henry, 1783-1874

Captain Henry King. English, born Torquay, 7th April 1783. Served in the Royal Navy as a midshipman rising to commander before retiring once peace was proclaimed. Worked next as a barge master on the 'Bude' and 'Holsworthy Canal'. Chief commissioner of the Plymouth Settlement Company. He arrived from England in 1841 aboard the 'Amelia Thompson', and became police magistrate, but a few months later was succeeded as Commissioner by Captain Liardet. He then settled, in company with George Cutfield, on his Brooklands section, bringing cattle from Australia in the ship 'Jupiter'.

Description: Sinclair was an eminent botanist and the journals record excursions around Auckland, Whangarei, Coromandel and Otago and are chiefly about the botany of the regions, with observations about geology, Maori occupation and people.
