Description: Seven interviews about the history of the Office of the Race Relations Conciliator. Former Conciliators interviewed are John Clarke, Walter (Wally) Hirsh, Chris Laidlaw, Rajen Prasad and Hiwi Tauroa. Also includes interviews with Ken Mason and Pita Sharples who discuss their roles during Sir Guy Powles' and Harry Dansey's times as Conciliator. Each person interviewed talks about his time in the Office and the major issues which arose during this time. Describes life as a young mother in Feilding, and moving to Wellington in 1972 where her interest in women's issues developed. Discusses involvement with the Society for Research on Women (SROW). Discusses research as J R MacKenzie Fellow. Talks about International Women's Year, 1975, and Women's Electoral Lobby. Comments on work at Labour Research Unit with Rosslyn Noonan and Judith Aitken. Talks about first industrial dispute as PSA Official and his shift from PSA to NZ Bank Officers' Union. Outlines task of reorganisation of BOU. Discusses renewal of award 1975/76 and two day strike. Mentions differences between BOU and the Bank Officers Guild and dissolving the Guild in 1977. Outlines differences in employment opportunities for men and women.
