Haughton, Charles Edward Mallard, 1827-1904

Born in New South Wales, taken to England as a child and educated at Oxford, where he graduated M.A. with the intention of entering the Church. Being appointed chaplain in HMS Queen he served in the Crimea. Later in the Euryalus, as chaplain and naval instructor he taught navigation and mathematics to the Duke of Edinburgh. He retired from the Navy and came to New Zealand in 1863 and practised as a mining agent at Queenstown in partnership with Henry Manders who succeeded him as editor of the Wakatipu Mail. Haughton was elected to the Otago Provincial Council in 1865, and sat for seven years (for Queenstown 1865-1867; Lakes 1867-1872). He was chairman of committees, and was a member of the executive in 1871 (as goldfields secretary under E B Cargill). In 1865-1866 he was a member of Parliament for the Goldfields, in 1866-1870 for Hampden, and in 1871 for Wakatipu. He retired from Parliament in 1871 to accept the position of Under-secretary for Immigration and Mines. In 1876 he left the Government service and joined the staff of the Wellington Independent, from which he passed late in 1870s to the Evening Post.
