First white man to cross the Tararua Range, later spent some years in Wairarapa before settling in Hawke's Bay in 1851. Licensed interpreter with NZ Land Purchase Dept. He worked under the Chief Land Purchase Commissioner, Donald McLean, and in association with Cooper, Kempthorne, and William N Searanacke. Father of W C V Grindell of Arapawanui.
