Description: Women dancers performing in a theatre, and outside on Nairn Street Park, Wellington City The information Neville Lewers left with these photographs identified the New Dance Group as being that established by Gisa Taglicht. This mistake was identified and rectified by three members of the New Dance Group, including Rona Bailey who supplied a type written history which is housed with the collection Arrangement: Associated negatives at 35mm, 27384 - 27391, and 1/2-181519-F - 1/2-181522-F. New Dance Group was formed in 1945 by Philip Smithells, Olive Smithells, Edith Sipos, and Rona Bailey. All of these people were aware of new dance developments in Europe and America. Some had studied overseas and thus had direct experience from working with leading exponents of modern dance Edith Sipos was a refugee from Czechoslovakia with dance skills based on her training in Europe Rona Bailey had trained in Physical Education and Recreation at the University of California, and Columbia University, New York from 1937 to 1939. Modern dance was a major componant of her training. She also did some work with Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey who were leading exponents of modern dance in the United States Philip Smithells was Superintendent of Physical Education in New Zealand. He was very interested in dance and knew of dance developments in Europe in the 1920s through such dancers as Mary Wigman and Hanya Holm. He was also very interested in the work of Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey in the United States Olive Smithells was Philip's wife. She was a Physical Education teacher with a strong background in different forms of dance including ballet By 1946 the group had grown to 16 in number and was attracting public attention through its public performances The group broke up in 1948 when Philip and Olive Smithells moved to Dunedin and other group members moved overseas or out of Wellington. Description: Born in Wanganui, aged seven years when family moved to Gisborne where father was manager of a shoe store owned by Rees Jones. Spent two years at Teachers' Training College before enrolling to do Modern Dance at the University of California and Colombia University, New York for her second year. Describes how contemporary dance broke barriers of ballet and how it took off in universities, with reference to the work of Martha Graham. Mentions Hallie Flanagan who developed Federal Theatre Project for out-of-work actors. Mentions Living Newspaper Theatre which dealt with contemporary issues, especially the oppressed. Refers to other events which had a big effect - hearing Harry Bridges, Secretary of Coachworkers Union; racism in California and Klu Klux Klan in Miami. Returned to Gisborne in May 1939. Explains how she came to teach Physical Education at Woodford House and how she incorporated contemporary dance technique into the physical education programme. Later became Physical Welfare Officer for Physical Welfare Branch and outlines her career in this field, explaining how the `New Dance Group' came about and its reviews. Joined the Communist Party in 1948 and became involved with the Anti-Apartheid Movement and the 1951 Waterside Lockout. Married and had daughter Meg. Contracted Tuberculosis. Became involved with theatre and at the request of Nola Millar taught movement at Summer school at Massey in 1964. Describes Kinaesthetic Movement. Later worked at Drama School. Discusses differences between training actors and dancers. In 1950s worked with New Zealand Opera Company and comments on performance of Petrouscha by Douglas Wright.
