Engineer and surveyor. Experienced in railway surveys and construction in UK. Came to Wellington ca 1845. Engineer-in-chief, Survey Department, Wellington 1853; later chief surveyor for Wellington and Hawkes Bay. Then surveyor to the Native Land Purchase Department until its abolition. Surveyor in charge, of sketch map showing extent of government purchases of Maori land by 1853. Represented Waimaramara in Hawke's Bay Provincial Council 1862 and Napier Town 1863. Description: Sketch map of the province of Wellington, with topographical features including rivers, and depicting three major pieces of information as at December 1853 (tinted blue): the quantity of land purchased from the Maori (as at July 1953 1,469,700 and tinted pink and as at December 1853 3,168,600), the estimated quantity of available land (5,172,084), and the estimated quantity of waste land (2,161,317) as per Commissioner Donald Mclean's statement. The total of these lands is given as 10,502,001. A note on the map states that 'the contents of the purchases tinted blue are only approximated - not having been surveyed'. The land blocks identified include Ahiaruhe, Puketoi, Hapuka, Ahuriri, Mohaka, Whanganui and Rangitikei. Please note that the blue and pink tints on the map are indistinguishable due to the copy being in black and white.
