Fairchild, John, 1835-1898

Husband of Mary Fairchild (née Charlton) and father of Wilfred Fairchild who died in infancy, aged 16 days (1882) and of 9 or 10 other children. Resident in Hawker Street, Wellington. Captain of government vessel 'Stella'. Also master of HM NZ 'Gundagai' (Paddle Steamer) ca 1865 and of other Government steamers, including the 'Luna', the 'Stella' and the 'Tutanekai'. He died aboard the 'Tutanekai' and is buried at Karori Cemetery.

Capt Fairchild was resident in Hawker Street, Mt Victoria, according to Wises Post Office Directory of 1890/1891. The information about the exact copy is confirmed in a manuscript 90-244.
