Crompton, William Morgan, 1811-1886

Politician, farmer, newspaper editor, teacher and artist. Born Birmingham, educated Bristol. Taught in northern France as a young man. Arrived in New Zealand in 1851, with his wife, Ann Solly and several children, initially working as a farmer in Omata. First editor of the Taranaki herald, 1852-1854. Lived at Omata, Taranaki, then in New Plymouth. Served in first New Zealand Parliament, 1854-1855 as an independent. Member of the Taranaki Provincial Council. School teacher in New Plymouth and from 1877-1884 Taranaki inspector of schools. His daughter, Mary Anne Crompton, married surveyor Stephen Percy Smith in Parnell in 1863.
