Julius went to New Zealand on the 'John Wickliffe', arriving on 22nd March 1848, on behalf of his Uncle Judge Valpy to take up land for which he had come first in the home ballot for sections and for which formal selection of the town lots had been fixed for 21st April 1848. He took the materials for building a house with him. He later returned to England and then with Emily and his family emigrated to New Zealand for good, where he took up sheep farming.
