Takaanui Tarakawa - Correspondence with S P Smith and paper on Te Arawa and Tainui canoes

Description: Comprises letters from Tarakawa to S P Smith discussing traditional matters (27 Nov 1893, 14, 29 August, 12, 17 Oct 1894); and a paper titled `Whakamarama-tanga o te pepa puru na'. The latter has a note by Smith describing this paper as an explanation of some matters referred to in his paper `The Coming of Te Arawa and Tainui canoes'. The traditional matter discussed in the letters includes Te Arawa whakapapa, information about the migration, arrival and settlement of Te Arawa and Tainui and related karakia, and notes about 19th century conflicts in the Bay of Plenty district; there are also discussions about the derivation of various Maori placenames, and about Maori attitudes to the use of traditional information. Description: Arranged in four parts this journal explores the history and whakapapa of the Ngati Toa people. It includes detailed whakapapa from Marangaiparoa, son of Toa Rangatira, with a special emphasis on the relationships between Ngati Toa and other closely related Kawhia tribes. The manuscript also details the migration of the Tainui and Te Arawa canoes to Aotearoa, with accompanying karakia; Purakau, or short historical narratives, about numerous Ngati Toa tupuna (ancestors); The migrations of the Ngati Toa tribes from Kawhia to the Kapiti district; And an examination of Maori theological concepts, and includes a discussion about the descent of the Maori people from Adam and Eve. Also records the baptism of various people into the Mormon church at Takapuwahia pa, Porirua, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Publication - This manuscript may be the original source material used by Sir Maui Pomare for the book "Legends of the Maori", 2 volumes [1930]. Description: Invitation card and programme, with handwritten name of addressee Hoani Te Heuheu. The front cover shows a photograph of the meeting house and an illustration of the Arawa canoe. Inside are illustrations of Tamatekapua the captain of the Arawa canoe entering the estuary of Maketu in the year 1340, and of Wahiao a celebrated chief of the Arawa people, with a whakapapa showing how he is descended from Tamatekapua. The back cover shows the programme, and a photograph of the late chief Mita Taupopoki. The invitation is issued by Te Aonui Dennan, H Tai Mitchell and the Tuhourangi and Wahiao tribes.
