Description: Letters, journals, genealogical information of a Cornish yeoman family, members of which emigrated to Australia and New Zealand. Includes journals of voyages to and from Australia 1850, 1853-1854, 1873-1874; memoirs of life in Cornwall, especially re Rev Edward Boaden's activity in the Methodist church; impressions of conditions in Australia; William Orchard's account of life in New Zealand as a shoemaker during the goldrush ca 1872 Includes the memoirs of John Boaden which describe in some detail his mother's work on the family farm, and household routine during the early part of the nineteenth century. Also a typed transcript of the diary kept by Eleanor Jane Orchard during a voyage from South Australia to England on the Victoria, December 1854-May 1855. On arrival in England Eleanor married John Boaden. Included is a letter to John from the Rev Edward Boaden who advised him at length on the requirements for a successful marriage.
