Description: Contains outward correspondence from Phyllis Long to her friend Doreen Ross of Waitomo. Long writes from England and Srinagar in Kashmir about her life. Includes descriptions of teaching and schools in both England and India, Long's engagement to Eric Tyndale-Biscoe, wedding, and birth of their son Hugh (and raising him by Truby King's method) and daughter Ann. Description of Kashmir include where they live; having servants; lakeside and houseboat holidays as well as skiing, hiking, and horse riding trips in the mountains; the family donkey and teaching the children to ride; riots by the Muslim population; and still and film photography. Long also reacts to the news from New Zealand including the health of friends, slump in wool prices, and construction of Tongariro Chateau at Mount Ruapehu "it sounds to us the place must be entirely ruined with this new hotel". Also describes returning to England to live with her parents in Cambridge and travelling around the United Kingdom with Tyndale-Biscoe as he gives talks about Kashmir. Also contains an official bulk letter from Tyndale-Biscoe in his position at the CMS Schools relating news that Hindu widows may now be remarried, the 1928 flood in Srinagar, and the religious riots. Some images are labelled with captions naming the subject. Slides include: - Photographs relating to gardening, including a variety of flower gardens and vegetable gardens. These include an unidentified woman in her vegetable garden on a farm with a spaniel watching on, a man with a plough in a vegetable garden on the same farm, and a group of unidentified women with a wheelbarrow full of produce. Two studio images show plants formally arranged in pots [possibly copies?]. - Image of houses and buildings in New Zealand, including unidentified villas, Auckland University Clock Tower, 'Otahuna' (the residence of Sir Heaton Rhodes in Tai Tapu) with field of blooming daffodils in the foreground, [railway?] sheds at the Port of Tauranga with Mount Manganui in the background, the T&G Building and adjacent earthquake memorial colonnade in Napier, and the Cawthron Institute building and garden in Nelson. Set also includes images buildings in England including a country cottage, Tudor houses [in Chester?], the chapter house of an unidentified cathedral, and Georgian terrace houses. Description: Scrapbook compiled by Vida Warren containing photographs and other materials from travel within New Zealand and on to the United Kingdom and Europe via various ports in 1884. In addition to photographs, the album contains drawings and paintings, pressed flora (flowers, ferns, and seaweed), printed matter, and newspaper clippings collected on the trip. Photographs are largely taken by commercial photographers. Photographer(s) unidentified. New Zealand images show views and buildings in Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, and sights in the Rotorua District. Also includes photographs of an unidentified Māori man and woman and a painting of a whare. Photographs collected on the voyage to London are largely cityscapes and street scenes. They show Sydney, Melbourne, Aden, Port Said, Malta, and Gibraltar. Other materials relating to the voyage include the menu from on board the SS 'Te Anau' (New Zealand to Australia) and material such as a programme for a concert from the RMS 'Mirzapore' (Australia to London). There is also a description of a fancy dress ball (including design for invitation, paintings of characters in costume) that took place on the 'Mirzapore'. Description: Photographs of YMCA Christmas trips in 1938 and 1939, to Milford Sound and the Whanganui River, taken by William Hall Raine. As well as photographs there are a number of newspaper and magazine cuttings, some of which were produced in the New Zealand Free Lance (January 25, 1939), following the Wellington Y.M.C.A. party on their trip to Milford. The photographs of the Whanganui trip were not taken by William Hall Raine, as he was on the Milford trip at the time.
