Includes some pages of writing, love poems, fortune-telling card interpretations, description of ideal man. The name William Purves is in large letters inside the back cover, and is the name of the protagonist of a short play in the sketchbook. Inscriptions: Inside front cover: Fanny Lydia Parker, March 29th, '63, Newtown.; Comments beside many of the portraits. Many signed F.L.P. Cut from an English publication on art. On the verso is a printed article about artist G.H.Boughton, 1895 Dating of image based on this article, which refers to artist G.H.Boughton exhibiting at the Royal Academy "30 years ago" in 1865. Description: Contains 109 sketches of Fiordland and the West Coast, from aboard S S Maori. Locations included are: Stewarts Island, Dog Island, Bluff, Horseshoe Bay, Preservation Inlet, Gulches Head, Northport, Dusky Sound, Cascade Cove, Acheron Passage, Breaksea Sound, Doubtful Sound, Thompson Sound, Nancy Sound, George Sound, Milford, Martin's Bay, Big Bay, Mt Aspiring, Jackson's Bay, Buller River, Westport, Cape Foulwind, Bucklands Peaks, Hokitika, Otira Gorge near Kelly's Creek, Mt Cook.. Most of the sketches are very simple and rough. Description: Family photographs of the William Hughes Field family, their home in Everton Terrace, Wellington, with views of Wellington and the harbour taken from various streets nearby. One group of images taken from Kelburn Park in February 1897 show the ship (with an escorting flotilla) in which Lord Glasgow was leaving New Zealand after his term as Governor of New Zealand. A few images show scenes in Christchurch. The yacht `Sunbeam' (privately owned by Lord Brassey) is shown in Wellington Harbour in a number of views. Several photographs shows areas on the outskirts of Wellington. Views fom Pukerua of the hills to the north and Kapiti Island; Otaihanga (with one of a Maori family at their home); Upper Hutt, showing Mr and Mrs Sarjeant's backyard, Mr and Mrs Barber's orchard, and two views of a farm owned by Mr [Martin?]; the coast at Island Bay, and fishermen and their huts at Island Bay.
