Scientist, university professor, eccentric. Born in England; came to New Zealand in 1874 to take up Chair in Chemistry at Canterbury University College; primarily known as a scientist and astronomer. Obliged to resign from his post in 1902, Professor Bickerton continued to write widely on astronomy and social reform. He developed his home and grounds in the east Christchurch suburb of Wainoni and in the early 1900's opened his `Wainoni Pleasure Gardens', which closed in 1913. Description: Papers of A C Gifford and A W Bickerton whose common interest was astronomy. Gifford's other interests included Shakespeare authorship, social credit, tramping in the Te Anau-Milford area. He taught at Christ's College and Wellington College, 1895-1927. Bickerton's papers, which were sent to Gifford after Bickerton's death include 29 volumes of journals, 1911-1928, and are concerned largely with astronomy, his advancing old age and daily activities. A large mass of articles and notes refer mainly to astronomy but also to his dismissal from the academic staff of Canterbury University College by the College board of governors in 1895.
