Description: Notarial copy by Henry Cornford Cheeswright, made in 1839, of the writ of dedimus potestatem for Rev. Butler as the first Justice of the Peace for New Zealand, 1819, issued by Gov. Lachlan Macquarie, New Zealand then being considered as an offshore dependency of New South Wales. The dedimus expired in 1820 on the death of King George III. The original dedimus is at Archives New Zealand in the Old Land Claims files (OLC 636). Butler became the Interpreter and 'Native Guardian' for the New Zealand Company and sailed for New Zealand in November 1839 to resume his magistracy. Description: Parallel text of Maori ("New Zealand") and English words and phrases. Work begins with a vocabulary of terms for parts of the body. The second part of the manuscript is dated 1822 and begins with a prayer, "O Jehovah thou art a great God...". The work continues with extracts from the "Phrases, sentences and dialogues etc." from the 1820 Grammar. The rest of the manuscript contains part of a vocabulary and miscellaneous writing exercises or word lists. Watermark: Britannia cartouche with "J Ansell 1814" This work has previously been attributed to both Rev J G Butler and Thomas Kendall. A close examination of it by Library staff member, Phil Parkinson, suggests it is the work of Butler (See: The Grammars and vocabularies of Thomas Kendall and John Gare Butler, `Turnbull Library record' vol 33, 2000).
