Description: Articles and reminiscences written by McKenzie describing life in Wellington and the early settlement of New Zealand, including visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall in 1901. Also letters to the editor of New Zealand Times, undated Includes `Voyage of ship Adelaide' (an account with many crossings out), includes 2 leaves of passenger names; short account of the Tory, 1839; short account of the Cuba, 1839 with list of passengers; list of passengers by Aurora, Oriental, Duke of Roxburgh, Bengal Merchant - all with short accounts; accounts entitled `Fire at the Hutt, 25 May 1840', `The earthquake', `The flood, 7 March 1840'. Also includes facsimile copy (possibly photomechanical print reproduction from late 19 Century) of a letter from Commander James Cook to John Walker of Whitby. Walker was James Cook's first employer, and for whom he served his apprenticeship. Letter is dated 20 Nov 1772 from the Cape of Good Hope. Description: Shipboard diary kept by James Greenwood, a cabin passenger on board the `Duke of Roxburgh' which sailed from London on 21 Sep 1839 and arrived at Wellington on 8 Feb 1840. Greenwood kept a detailed record of events on board, mentioning many of his fellow passengers, especially Mr and Mrs Gomm. He also relates the drowning of the Captain which happened just outside the entrance to Port Nicholson, his and others first impressions of Wellington and the first week after arrival. Mention is made of the `Oriental' and ` Aurora' which had arrived in Wellington shortly before the `Duke of Roxburgh'. The diary entries cover 20 Sep 1839-25 Feb 1840. Description: A hill with fern and low scrub in the foreground, with a view across the bush-covered Hutt Valley and Petone to the Wainuiomata Hills, with the Harbour, Somes Island and four immigrant ships, the harbour entrance and Miramar Peninsula. There are houses built by the first European settlers on the beach, possibly along with the buildings of Petone Pa, although the latter are indistinguishable from the settlers' houses. The Pa may be hidden from sight by a low rise to the right. Original drawing for a lithograph in E. J . Wakefield's "Illustrations to Adventure in New Zealand" (London, 1845) Plate 3, with title "Port Nicholson from the hills above Pitone in 1840". The lithograph includes in its foreground a Maori woman gathering crops or food and three pigs. The ships shown are probably the first four immigrant ships to arrive in Wellington, the Aurora, the Oriental, the Duke of Roxburgh and the Bengal Merchant. The ships arrived between 22 January and 28 February 1840. Other Titles - Petone Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - title, signature, and "Portfolio D" [the latter inscribed by staff of the New Zealand Company in London.; Recto - top centre - No. 55.
