Description: Shows 'Touai' (Tuai) at left in European dress with bayonet, and 'Chongui' (Hongi Hika) in Maori dress with a long staff or club at right. Danvin has copied this image from de Sainson's original work entitled "Shonguy.Touai" in Dumont d'Urville's "Voyage pittoresque autour du monde..." Paris, 1834. vol.2, opp. p.371 (qRare 910.8 DUM Voya). Sainson has in turn copied his image from Jules Louis Lejeune's "Naturels de la Nouvelle Zelande" - originals done 1824, and copied for publication 1826 - see ATL copies at C-082-096/097. From a French edition of Domeny di Rienzi's "Oceanie" not held by the Library; ATL's copies have title of work in either 2 or 3 languages beneath the image, whereas this work has title in French only. The book was reissued several times between its original publication in 1836-37 and 1872. ATL has 1863 edition at 919 DOM. Duperrey's ship, the "Coquille" visited New Zealand in April 1824. Tuai slept on board several times. Hongi was offered the chance to sleep on board, but refused. (See: "New Zealand seen by the French" (1991) page 18.) Description: A Maori 'fork' carved out of a bone belonging to Korokoro, the recently-deceased chief of Kahuwera Pa, Bay of Islands. The fork is actually an ornamental comb, or heru, for wearing in the hair. A square-headed club from Rotuma (Fiji) and another with a round head from New Ireland (New Guinea). A depiction of a person's nose from New Ireland, with its pierced ornaments in situ. A stone axe, with its handle lashed to it with plaited rope. At the bottom of the page, a large hair ornament with a woven strap including mother-of-pearl, a central section surrounded with animal teeth and a large flattish shell at the base. Drawn in Paris by Chazal from artefacts brought back by Duperrey, 1823-1825. Likely to have been drawn by Chazal from specimens brought back to France from Duperrey's visit to the South Pacific and the Bay of Islands in 1824. Other Titles - New Zealand.
