Heine family : Anna Dierks' diary, and Pastor Heine's recollections

Date: 1875-1893, [1998]

By: Heine family

Reference: MSX-5085

Description: Anna Dierk's diary is a detailed account of her life as an elder daughter in a household of fourteen children and as a missionary's wife. Written in German Gothic text the diary was translated into English by her son, Theo Dierks. Joachim Mattner compared this English translation with the original German text and noted alterations which he felt were accurate translations of the original. The text which appears here is a typescript copy of Theo Dierk's English translation with Mattner's annotation inserted into the text in square brackets. It is accompanied by a note by the donor explaining the background to, and providing a summary of, Mattner's annotations. Pastor Heine's recollections were written in 1884 at the request of his family and contain an account of his ancestory and childhood. The narrative ceases in 1828 while he was still a boy in living in Germany. The typescript contains minor corrections by Mattner inserted in the text and indicated by square brackets. Relationship complexity - Photocopy of original diary of Anna Dierks located at MS-Papers-6083; modern German translation located at MS-Papers-6180 and English translation by Theo Dierks located at MS-Papers-2326 Rev Johannes Wilhelm Christoph Heine was a Lutheran pastor to the German congregation at Upper Moutere.
