McDiarmid, Douglas Kerr, 1922-2020

Artist, born Taihape. Educated in Timaru and Christchurch. Studied as a musician at Canterbury University but turned to art. Served in the NZ Army and Air Force, living and studying in London for some time immediately after the war. Has lived in Paris since about 1950. He visited Wellington over the summer of 1947-1948, and lived in Wellington 1949-1950. In the latter period he worked at the Alexander Turnbull Library as a cataloguer. Helped form the Thursday Club with Helen Hitchings. Began as a landscape painter but progressed to portraits and figure studies. Preoccupied with the "human predicament". Association with Salon des Independants, Dessin et Peintre a l'eau, Terres latines, Selection Othon Griesz, Biennale de Menton, gallery Pierre Montal, Norwich International 1960, Stamford International 1964, Bristol Commonwealth Exhib 1968. Exhibited with The Group, late 40s and early 50s.

He died in Paris on 26 August 2020, at the age of 97.
