Description: George Stuart Macleod born Dunedin. Recalls family history of unionism and job as a milk boy on a farm which he lost during Depression, later working on coal burners on the `Karetu'. Describes conditions on ships and relationships between the crews. Recalls joining New Zealand Seafarers Union (NZSU) 26 October 1938, with reference to compulsory unionism and union book. Was elected to National Council in 1951. Left sea 1956 and elected Secretary Dunedin and South Island Branch. Reflects on the 1951 Waterfront Lockout. Recalls election as Dunedin NZSU president and later election as Secretary. Mentions: Jimmy Lynch, Bluey MacQuarrie, Frank Trainor, Dan Macleod, Bill Clark and Nestor Taylor. Discusses agreement negotiated over the 'Whanganella'. Discusses new technology and mentions the `Karatane' which was the first coastal motor ship. Also mentions the `Waitemata'. Description: Life histories of two long standing members of the New Zealand Seafarers' Union: Alfred (Alf) Arthur Hollis and Douglas (Doug) Huia Te Whiwhi Morton. The interviewees give their family backgrounds and talk about their childhoods and education. They recall first going to sea, World War II service as a fireman and merchant sailor, respectively, as well as numerous seafaring jobs post-war. They discuss shipping types including coal and oil burners, diesels, Lyttelton and Cook Strait ferries, container ships and Maui rig ships. They describe conditions at sea, the food, the sleeping quarters and wages. Both interviewees discuss union politics, the Communist influence in the Union, leading unionists, significant negotiations as well as conflicts and strikes. Some of the names they mention include: Tom Anderson, Jock Barnes, Ronnie Blake, Tommy Heptinstall, Bill (Pincher) Martin, Fintan Patrick Walsh, Jimmy Woods.
