Farmer, explorer, linguist and judge of the Native Land Court. Born in Edinburgh and educated at Norfolk House Academy, Southsea. Arrived in Nelson on the "Slains Castle" in 1845, with his uncle James Mackay (1804-1875). Farmed and learnt Māori. With his cousin, James Mackay (1831-1912) purchased the Kaikoura Block (1859) and travelled to the West Coast of the South Island (1860). In 1864 was made Commissioner of Native Reserves in the South Island and Resident Magistrate. Published "Compendium of official documents relative to native affairs in the South Island" in 1872. In 1882 he moved to Wellington as Commissioner of Native Reserves for New Zealand. Became a Native Land Court judge in 1884. In 1886 and 1890-1891 he investigated Kai Tahu claims in the South Island. He retired in 1902. Died in Feilding. In 1863 he married Hannah Sarah Gibbs (d 1926), the daughter of William Gibbs (1863). See DNZB (Vol 2, 1870-1900, p289-290)

Original and certified copies of maps relating to South Island land purchases and reserves. Publication - A compendium of official documents relative to native affairs in the South Island / compiled by Alexander Mackay; Nelson, New Zealand: The Govt. of N.Z., 1871-1872, two volumes. A preliminary two volume set of the compendium which was later published in 1873. There was one other known such volume which predates the 1873 version which was created at Mackay's request for W.B.D. Mantell who had assisted the Commissioner in preparing the report.
