Description: Margaret Balneaves (nee Dagger) born Dunedin 1922 and lived there until her marriage in 1945. Outlines family background - father, Robert Dagger served with Otago Regiment at Gallipoli - mother, Rebecca McIntosh, came to New Zealand as a war bride in 1919. Recalls primary and secondary schools at Dunedin, clothing during Depression, Proficiency certificate and employment with firm of J and A P Scott. Describes meeting future husband, Andrew Balneaves, who served in Egypt with Light Division and taken prisoner of war by Germans in 1941. Recalls accommodation problems after marriage and husband's transfer to Wellington. Refers to Rev Lloyd Geering, whose wife, Nancy, had died, and his offer of the use of Wellington Manse. Recalls looking after Johnny Geering aged 5 and Judy Geering aged 3 in the manse for 18 months. Describes move to house in Tawa where they have lived for the past 50 years. Gives description of life in Tawa and mentions neighbours; Norma and Hec Leckie; Pauline and Keith Parker; Mr and Mrs Hazel Wood; George and Mary Boderick; Francis and Ray Boderick; Olga and Ted Harrington. Recalls first shop, a dairy / grocery run by Mrs Grether, Post office run by Mrs Hilton, butcher shop owned by Mr Council and bakery run by Mrs Hoare (nee Mexted). Discusses the Mexted family and their contribution to Tawa life with reference to Graham Mexted who played in 1951 All Blacks and his son, Murray also an All Black. Recalls father working as traveller for John Raine Ltd, a china importing firm owned by mother's family. Talks about Tawa stream which used to flood. Describes involvement with Methodist Church Tawa and refers to Sunday School and picnics etc. Lists shops in Tawa. Recalls the war years and refers to the Americans and social life with special Tawa farewells and welcome homes for soldiers. Mentions balls at Majestic Theatre. Refers to the Mexted family who owned a lot of land in Tawa. Describes Tawa's progress after the war.
