Luxford, John Aldred (Rev), 1854-1921

Methodist clergyman. He saw service in the South African War as a Methodist chaplain, and with the oubreak of war in 1914 he volunteered to work as a chaplain for the NZ troops. He was attached to different regiments, but spent longer periods with the Wellington and Otago Infantry Regiments. He worked as chaplain in Egypt before being sent to Gallipoli where he was severely wounded, and had to have a leg amputated. He was eventually sent to England where he was appointed chaplain to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames

Description: Collection consists of diaries written by Luxford from the time he departed New Zealand in 1914 till he was wounded in 1915. Also includes newspaper clippings covering his career, a report to Luxford from Chaplain Capt Blamires, an order for clothing, a telegram concerning the whereabouts of various chaplains and information on NZ patients in hospitals in Alexandria.
