Art historian and artist (painting and photography). Resided Waiheke Island 1979. Between 1960 and 1977, worked for various significant New Zealand libraries and art galleries, including the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington. Graduated with Diploma in Fine Arts from Canterbury School of Art 1956. Exhibited at various dealer galleries in 1960s. Author of 'Colin McCahon: Artist' and 'An Introduction to New Zealand Painting' (with Hamish Keith). Awarded the OBE in 1980 for services to Art History. In 2002 Victoria University established the Gordon H Brown Lecture series to further art historical scholarship in New Zealand.
