Born Haslemere, Surrey, England; arrived in New Zealand in 1902; educated at Waihi School (Winchester, Sth Canterbury) and Christ's College (Christchurch); served in British and Indian armies, 1915-1922; sheepfarmer, 1922-1949; resident in Wellington, 1951. Published "High Country" (1939); "New Zealand Notables" (series I, 1941; II, 1945; III, 1950); "Life and times of Sir Julius Vogel" (1948); "Outlaw's Progress" (1943); "Scholar errant" and "The New Dominion".
