New Zealand novelist. Used pseudonym John Guthrie. Born in New Plymouth, where he worked as a journalist and following a rugby accident had a leg amputated. Attended Canterbury University College and was nominated for a Rhodes Scholarship. He wrote his first novel, `The Little country' in 1935. In 1938 he returned to London where he was a journalist, wrote and served with the RAF during World War II. Wrote seven novels, including `The Seekers', and in 1946 published a memoir of his father, `The Man in our lives'. Representative at PEN 1948 Conference at Copenhagen and 1949 executive meeting in London. Returned to New Zealand in 1954 but died on the journey back to England.
