Vercoe, Tony, 1919-2018

Nelson-born singer and founder of Kiwi Pacific Records. Civil servant before enlisting for WWII mid 1940, serving with 22nd (Infantry) Battalion, being taken prisoner and spending time in POW camps in Italy and Germany. Studied at Trinity College and Royal College of Music 1947-1951. Sang and acted in various operas and dramas in Britain and New Zealand. Author of 'Yesterday's Drums' published by Steele Roberts Ltd, and of and 'Survival at Stalag IVB' published 2006. Retired to Whitby, Porirua, New Zealand.

Description: Interview with Antony (Tony) Vercoe, born in Nelson in 1919. Refers to his family background including three Vercoe brothers who arrived in Taranaki in 1840. Mentions his father, who had served in World War I, was distant and tended to stay away from their predominantly female home. Comments on his parents separating eventually, his schooling and the 1929 Murchison earthquake. Discusses being encouraged to sing by his sister Peg who played the piano and singing in the Nelson College choir. Talks about getting a job with the Department of Lands and Survey in Wellington in 1938, his mother moving to Wellington with a piano, and having singing lessons. Mentions entering singing competitions, being encouraged by his placings, and singing in the Wellington Choral Union. Reflects on how his musical interests were widened by touring overseas soloists. Refers to joining the territorials in 1938, being called up in 1940, and sent to Maadi Camp in Egypt where they met survivors from Crete. Comments on being taken prisoner and sent to Italy and later Germany. Talks about opportunities to sing in the Army, on the ship going over, and in prisoner of war camps, singing ballads, folk songs and song from movies. Mentions Neville Lodge was in one POW camp at the same time. Comments on getting a rehabilitation bursary after the War to study at Trinity College of Music, London, later transferring to the Royal College of Music to train as an opera singer.
