South Island prints three

Description: Photographs of the South Island of New Zealand taken by Les Cleveland, 1959 to 2007. Information relating to the content as well as the date taken and the date printed, is on the rear of most prints. Identified people are: Senior Sergeant George Christopher Donnelly of Hokitika police; Ivy Harper and Bert Birchfield; Mike Armstrong and Jim Daken; Mary and Heather Cornwell; Charleston coal mine operator Neil Mouat; Mack Heinz; Tex Smith; Mike Armstrong; Henry Heveldt and M Bennett of Nolan's Mill; Garth Graham; meat shooters Mike Bennett and Kevin Blythell; John 'Opo' Angus, the Eggling brothers; helicopter pilot Ben Morris and Les's wife Mary Cleveland; and Johnny Hewer, Claire Easterbrook and Liam Easterbrook in front of the Neils Beach school house. Featured natural environments include the hot springs at Welcome Flat and the Karangarua Valley, River, Ranges, and the view from the Sefton bivouac, Ocean Beach, and Neils Beach, including car wrecks at the rubbish dump. Other images (and series of images) of note include scenes from the Kumara races; environmental damage (slips and road works at Milford Tunnel, Inangahua River road, and Haast and Jackson's Bay area; open face coal mining at Charleston; deer hunting, largely based in Mussel Point; Central Otago Hotels (Cardrona, White Horse, and Vulcan); Post Offices and boxes (St Bathan's, Outram, Ophir, and Dunedin) and a Pacific Films crew on Fox Glacier. Also includes images of James Heveldt's grave (Jackson's Bay), Peregrine Vinyard, a new house in Bannockburn, a girl in a Westport ice cream parlour, women in a Carter's Sawmill shop, a Hokitika cake stall, and various shop fronts and signage in Dunedin, Gore, and on the West Coast. Transparencies of Haast and surrounding area

Description: Transparencies relating to Westland, mainly Haast, circa 1966-1969. Taken by Les Cleveland. Photographs include Gates of Haast and other Haast River images as well as coastal scenes. A series of aerial photographs show the Carters Mill and Haast Beach. Unidentified men are photographed in a "waltzing contest" at Waiatoto Bridge and unidentified children are photographed on horseback. Further images of Westland include Rimu Forest in South Westland, an unsealed road through tropical forest in North Westland [near the Turimawiwi River?], Arawhata Valley, photographs relating to glaciers, and an aerial photograph of Mount Aspiring. Description: Transparencies of South Westland, including river and beach areas, and images relating to "meatshooters", 1967-1971. Taken by Les Cleveland. Photographs include the airstrip at Mussel Point, Haast Beach, musterers on horseback with dogs driving cattle on the banks of the Haast River. A number of images are taken from the air. A series of images relate to "Meat Planes" and "Meatshooters" [deer hunters?] with planes and helicopters photographed on the Waiatoto River flats. In a mountainous area a man [holds?] the bottom [skid?] of a helicopter in flight. A series of images show Mike T Bennett. He is seen smoking, carrying a pig on his back, with the severed head of a deer, with a large pile of antlers, and at a "meatshooters" camp by a fire. Lorraine Bennett is photographed cooking and Rosina [Sands?] is seen with her children at a Mussel Point location. A series of images show the Bennett family and "Haastians" having a picnic at Mussel Point. Mussel Point airstrip photographs also include other unidentified children of meat shooters. Description: Contains photographic prints showing a range of subjects and locations relating to Les Cleveland's life, 1939 to circa 2007. Photographs taken by Les Cleveland and other unidentified photographers. Includes photographs and images relating to World War Two, photographs taken on Cleveland family trips overseas including in Portugal and the United States of America (Washington D.C. and New York City), and Cleveland family scenes in New Zealand including Donna Cleveland and her children Max and Maddie (Les Cleveland's grandchildren). A sequence of photographs shows author Michael Jackson's book launch on the 29th August 1997 in Palmerston North, with Les Cleveland appearing in one photograph. Photographs taken on the West Coast of New Zealand include photographs relating to mining, buildings, meatshooting, tramping trips with unidentified friends, and bush. A laser print of a nude of Mary Cleveland, taken circa 1970, is also included. Les Cleveland is photographed beside a river [circa 1940s to 1950s]. A modern print of a woman reclining with a fan, her dress falling off her shoulder, likely from circa 1900s, is unattributed. Photographic ephemera includes original print wallets, photographer's notes for development, and a paper fold used to keep a set of prints together. Title supplied by Library. Arrangement: Prints arrived at the library in a file box in no discernible order. Some were loose while others were in photo wallets or kept together by folds of paper. Note that none of these prints had correpsponding negatives stored with them. Prints largely relating to mountaineering, tramping, and skiing

Description: Largely consists of photographic prints of mountaineering and tramping excursions, including to Copland Pass, Cameron Valley, and Cook River, as well as skiing on Fox Glacier, circa 1950 to 1954. Taken by Les Cleveland. Meatshooter Mike Armstrong is photographed on the Cook River trip panning for gold and riding in the cafe of a flying fox over the Balfour River. Photographs from the Copland Pass trip including Bill [Crawshaw?] at Douglas Hut, Jungle Creek, and numerous photographs of a weka. Also contains three photographic prints either used by Cleveland to make copy negatives or printed from copy negative made by Cleveland, of bullock driving, mustering sheep on horseback, and a gum digger's hut. Original photographers are unidentified. Finally, a photographic postcard, made by the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Plymouth, features a reproduction of a portrait of an unidentified Māori man, taken in circa 1870 to 1890 by an unidentified photographer. Description: Photographs of mountaineering and tramping taken by Les Cleveland in 1947 to circa 1960s. A small number of prints have captions which include the title Cleveland gave the photograph (including the location it was taken) and the date it was taken and printed. Some prints are stamped "Les Cleveland Photograph" or with Cleveland's home address. Some prints are vintage prints. This set of photographs also contains National Publicity Studios prints and one photograph taken by John Pascoe. The majority of the photographs are taken in New Zealand. Photographs feature mountaineers, mountain landscapes (peaks, glaciers, valleys), and bush scenes (including bush camps). Identified people include Len Brown, John Lange, A. C. Clough, John Pascoe, Ray Chapman, Stan Conway, Les Cleveland, Mike Armstrong, and Mack Heinz. There are a number of images of Cleveland, Brown, and Armstrong. Mary Cleveland also appears in one image with an unidentified man who is holding a gun. Identified locations include the Balfour Gorge, Mussel Point Airstrip, Scott Peak, Mackenzie Basin (including Lake Pukaki), Copeland Pass, Copeland Gorge, Upper Karangarua, Mount Dilemma, Mount Cook, Mount Tasman, and a Welcome Flat hot pool. A series of image shows a group of backcountry skiers, the construction of a snow cave, and men roped together on a mountain face. Title transcribed from item.
