Description: Transcription of Margaret Fidler's 1877 shipboard journal kept aboard the `City of Santiago' on its voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne. Further transcription of Fidler's subsequent voyage from Australia to Bluff aboard the `Arawata'. Also includes research endnotes provided by Webster which relate to Fidler's text. Margaret Fidler left Liverpool on 22 Feb 1877 on the ship `City of Santiago' which took her as far as Melbourne. During this part of the voyage she shared a cabin with a six year old girl who was travelling alone to meet her family in Australia. After a short stay in Melbourne Fidler travelled to Bluff on the `Arawata'. She was met by others of her family at Port Chalmers. Fidler provides a detailed account of daily activities aboard ship, the crew and passengers she interacts with, weather events, food and beverage taken with meals and the engaging personalies she witnesses. Also provides copies of the "nautical alphabet" and an In Memoriam composed by a Mr Wood for a deceased passenger.
