Description: The story of two related families, Barraud and Chapman, who came to New Zealand as pioneer settlers. It touches on their voyages out on the Bangalore in 1844 and the Pilgrim in 1849, raising their children and the difficulties they had to overcome settling in. Through the letters of 12 year old Jessie Sarah Barraud it describes their two year trip home to England in 1875, the places they saw and the relatives they visited. Later in New Zealand the story recounts the day to day happenings, people and events that took place, paricularly in and around Wellington, as well as Milton and Wanganui. Description: Shows the coastlines of England, France and Spain, West and South Africa, Brazil, and southern Australia round to Sydney. Travel distances recorded. Dates and relative location along the voyage are given. Route of travel from England followed the coastlines of France, Spain, West Africa, Brazil, South Africa, Indian Ocean and Australia to Sydney. Longitudes 15 degree grid drawn in. Inscription inside backcover: "Originally a section plan of the town of Wellington. It has been used by Henry Chapman father of Justice H.S. Chapman for a totally different purpose, namely to build up a map sufficient to the globe to lay down the voyage of the Bangalore in which H.S. Chapman and his wife and son sailed from London to Auckland New Zealand in the ship Bangalore in 1843. It is practiclly impossible to preserve the original map while this purpose is kept in mind; but it is here. The charted voyage goes in fact only as far as Sydney NSW and for this record it is kept.
