Aubrey, Charles, fl 1868-1906; [Athol, Southland]. 1882

Date: 1882

By: Aubrey, Christopher, active 1868-1906

Reference: D-040-004

Description: Shows a panoramic view of the early settlement of Athol in Southland. It is surrounded by snow-peaked hills, with the Slate Range to the right. The Athol Hotel, run at the time by Samuel Paddon, and smaller out-buildings can be seen on the left, in front of which stand a cart and four horses. To the right is the train station, with a steam locomotive approaching. A path crosses the field between these buildings, and a number of people are in the scene, some crossing the path towards the station. A number of cows, including two calves, stand or sit in the field, and there are flowering harakeke in the foreground. The rosy colour of the sky suggests it is early morning or early evening. The painting incorporating the settlement and surrounding hills have been cut along the hill outline and pasted to another sheet, on which the sky has been painted. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - C Aubrey 1882 [in brushpoint] All the railway lines have now been replaced by roads. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
