Description: Sketches by Melvin Day, mainly undated, comprising: Five sketches on the reverse of Rotorua High School pupils' library cards. One sketch is dated "15 Ma[rch] 1951". Also includes one library card with no sketch on the reverse. Names on library cards are "Iharaira, Robert M; Taylor, Warwick J E; Mackay, Ross A; Head, Wo; Brian; Ronald Head". Three of the cards also record the year as 1951 and the form as "I Boys". Sketches are of human forms and face, and Māori carvings, one is possibly a hei tiki (167 x 127 mm). An undated sketch of a young person, possibly a Maōri woman (559 x 345 mm). Undated sketches on a folded sheet of paper, depicting aspects of Māori material and cultural heritage, one possibly after H Robley, with titles "Maori digging with ko", "Method of tattooing", "Tattooed head", "Method of weaving", and "Throwing a spear". One sketch of a man wearing a cloak indicates the material as being flax and kiwi. Also a sketch of a man riding a donkey. (675 x 430 mm). A sketch of hills titled "Waimangu Turnoff" with raupō and road indicated in the foreground, [a date?] below the title reads "12/9" (223 x 260 mm). Study of foliage and fruit (including cross-section of a Chinese gooseberry (kiwifruit)) with colours indicated (400 x 285 mm). Design in black ballpoint pen for abstract painting or paintings (147 x 210 mm). One trade sample of ‘Aquarelle’ brand hand-made paper (345 x 260 mm), printed with brand and one small scrap of hand-made paper, Pencil sketch on paper, possibly of Wellington Harbour which reads on the reverse "These works have been photographed and catalogued" (355 x 380 mm). Four loose works on paper, square format, mixed media; including one landscape sketch signed and dated "Day/2012"; also including one abstract design inscribed on back in blue ballpoint pen with notes on Oroya Day collection valuation 2003, (250 x 250 mm approximately). Four designs for paintings after Piero della Francesca, mixed media on light card; annotated on back with artist’s contact details and prices; numbered: #1, #3, #5, #6; (147 x 104 mm). Title supplied by Library. Day worked as a teacher in the Rotorua area in the early 1950s. Quantity: 1 folder(s) containing 22 sheets.
