Barnao, Giuseppe Antonio, 1926-

Barnao, Joe, 1926-, Barnao, Joseph Anthony, 1926-

Born on 26 December 1926 in Island Bay Wellington, as Giuseppe Antonio, but known as Joseph Anthony, or Joe, Barnao. His parents may have been Bartolomeo Barnao and his wife Marjory (née Paino).

The gift of a clarinet in 1942, set him "on the road to a life in music". In 1943, he joined the "Golden Horn" music shop in Vivian Street as a trainée musical instrument repairer. He played in dance bands, toured with J C Williamson and Tivoli Theatre shows, and was a bandsman with the 1st Battalion Wellington Regiment. He became treasurer of the Garibaldi Club 1952-1956. During a visit to London he met and married Mildred Upton of Palmerston North in 1959. Mildred died in 1996.

He returned to Wellington in 1960, then moved to Levin in 1962 to open a music shop which ran until 1988. In 2000 he helped organise the "Stromboli Connection" display of family histories, and was on the advisory panel for Te Papa's "Qui Tutto Bene" exhibition in 2004. He married again, to Johanna Adrianna Harding.

The Dennis Huggard files (MS-Papers-9018-03) state that Joe Barnao played in the Swingmen Orchestra in 1946, with the Syd Krs Band in 1952, with Tony Noorts in 1954 and 1962, with the Don Richardson Big Band in 1956-1957, and with the Levin Big Band in Manawatu Jazz Festivals in 1991 and 1998.
