Description: Photograph album containing images taken between 1924 and 1928 by John Richard Sutton during trips around the upper North Island, mainly in the Auckland and Northland areas. Compiler of album unidentified, probably J R Sutton. Most images are annotated with dates and brief information, though most individuals are unidentified. Persons who are named are: Melbourne Pita and Ngapuhi Pita at Whangaruru; and Guide Rangi at Whakarewarewa. The album demonstrates Sutton's interest in ships, boats and wharves, and includes images of ships visiting as part of the Special Service Squadron to Auckland, 10 May 1924; the visit of the United States fleet to Auckland in August 1925; pleasure boats including the 'Leitner'; and a scene with Calliope Dock in Auckland in 1926, including the extension of berthage. The album also shows travel and leisure activities in 1920s New Zealand. Images include groups of people, women at picnics, rocks, water, sundials, domestic and zoo animals, houses, cliffs, waterfalls, and nature scenes. The album includes general views and coastal scenes taken at a range of locations including Russell, Whangaroa, Tutukaka, Ngunguru, Great Barrier Island, Hunua, Great Mercury Island, Whangaruru, Huia, Karekare Beach, Piha, Whakarewarewa, Ohinemutu, Whakatane, and Gisborne. (Not all locations have been indexed). John Richard Sutton, born in Liverpool, England, arrived in New Zealand in 1910. He worked as a civil engineer.
