Description: Album of photographs, postcards and newspaper cuttings relating to Samoa and Tonga, circa 1920s. Many of the photographs, and some of the newspaper cuttings have limited captions, or no identification at all. At the beginning of the album there is a signed Christmas card from George Spafford Richardson, with a photograph of him and another European standing in front of a fale with a large group of Samoan men. One image of Robert Louis Stevenson ([p 2]), is signed by him, and another one shows the tomb of Stevenson and his wife Frances Matilda (Aolele). There are a number of views of Vailima, Stevenson's home, one early view showing Stevenson on the verandah with a group of women and another man standing above looking over the balustrade. Description: Photographs of Hawai'i, Samoa and New Zealand, taken by various photographers circa 1880s and 1890s, including John Richard Morris, John Davis, F Finch and Josiah Martin. Inserted in an envelope is a hand-written list of photos, but these seem to bear no relationship to the album. The list includes places in New Zealand (none of which are in this album), Sydney, New South Wales, Brisbane, New Caledonia and Fiji (again none of which are shown in this album). The photographs of Hawai'i include Iolani Palace in Honolulu, and Queen Lili'uokalani; Samoan images show children, a waterfall at Falefa near Apia, and a group of dancers in traditional dress. Images of New Zealand include landscapes, Maori children, a hongi with two women, and a collage taken by Josiah Martin of images of Maori chiefs, waka and meeting houses at Parihaka and Ohinemutu. Description: Photographs of Samoa taken between 1905 and 1936, some taken by Samoan photographer Alfred James Tattersall, many by unidentified photographers. One photograph is not related to the rest, showing two young women flautists from Highcliff School, Dunedin, winners of a Dunedin competition in 1918 (P 90) The earliest ones, taken in 1905, show the damage caused by a volcanic eruption, and show lava pouring into the sea. The rest of the images are related to Donald Alexander John Rutherford, headmaster at Ifi Ifi School (Leififi School) from 1919, becoming Superintendent of Schools from 1923 to 1936. There are many scenes which include his family, with his wife and four children (including Alexander Mathieson Rutherford). Many of the scenes show school activities, including the ceremonies surrounding the opening of the new school at Avele; the schools at Malifa, at Ifi Ifi, Poutasi, Aleipata and other districts; sports teams; school parades, including boy scouts linked with the schools; and groups of teachers, both European and Samoan. General views of Samoa include the construction of a fale, the interior of a fale; fishing; cocoa beans and their harvesting and drying; copra industry, with Solomon Island workers; and sowing cotton seed. Several images show the celebrations for George V's birthday; school breakup feasts; and the farewell flotilla of canoes when the Rutherford family left Samoa in 1936. Social activities of the Europeans in Samoa include tennis, large groups of bowlers, and garden parties at Vailima, the Governor's residence. Description: Photographs of Samoa taken during the 1920s by unidentified photographers. Images include scenes of Samoan ceremonies, including the presentation of Fine Mats at Mulinu'u; an investiture; Anzac Day, placing wreaths on the graves of soldiers who died in samoa; scenes of the Faipule (this image with the inscription "Faipule. Samoan Parliament"); ceremonial welcoming canoes; Sir Charles Fergusson, and General George Spafford Richardson; and scenes at various schools, including group portraits of pupils and staff, and sporting teams. Another sequence shows the damage which occurred during a hurricane in 1925, including the grounding of the ship Lady Roberts, and destruction of plantations and buildings. Two photographs have an additional historical note: On page 72: "Visit to native village. `Historical photo. This indicates the rising of the organisation of the "Mau". General Richardson visits the biggest villages. Note the poor attendance and the disturbed countenance of the Chief'. Description: Album of Samoan photographs taken mainly at Tutuila Island and Ta'u, American Samoa, but also includes images from Upolo, Samoa, taken and compiled by Eddy Williams, a pharmacist who served with the US Navy 1914-1935. Williams was stationed at the American naval station in Pago Pago Harbour on Tutuila from June to September 1924. Images show Tutuila and Ta'u island and its people, including landscapes, landmarks, coastal views and buildings. Images of Samoan people wearing traditional garments and adornments, and United States Navy personnel in uniform. Portraiture ranges from formal group portraits to social snapshots, with others showing activities such as the manual processing of coconuts. Images of children and young adults posing for the camera. Also includes images of tatooing and the tools used. Other images show ships and canoes. Many of the photographs include no caption information. The following is a selection of captions from the album: - 'Flower Pot, Tutuila, Samoa' - known locally as Fatu ma Futi - a rock at the entrance to Pago Pago Harbour in American Samoa. - 'Windblown coconut trees on Pago Pago Bay showing Rainmaker in the distance' - the Rainmaker Mountain, also known as North Pioa Mountain. - 'Entrance to Pago Pago' - 'A Fale or native house in the village of Pango Pango [Pago Pago] on Tutuila' - 'An extra large breadfruit tree' - 'A native house on the beach at Tau' - 'A cluster of papaias [papayas] which grows in Siufaga' - 'Vaitupu, the last queen of Manua. Description: Album of photographs of American Samoa and Samoa, taken and compiled by Eddy Williams, a pharmacist who served with the United States Navy 1914-1935. Williams was stationed at the American naval station in Pago Pago Harbour on Tutuila from June to September 1924. The broad range of images in this collection provide a detailed documentation of Tutuila Island and other Samoan islands in the early 1920s, however the complete lack of captions in this album has resulted in some of the subject matter remaining unidentified. Images show Tutuila naval station, the islands, European and indigenous people. The collection includes photographic documentation of the following: - The built environment - Fale, government administrative buildings, military barracks, school buildings, and dwellings. - Landscapes - including coastal views, mountains, seascapes and natural features, such as the Alofaaga Blowhole. - Ships and canoes - including the United States naval cargo and passenger vessel USAT 'Buford', which visited the South Seas in 1924. Description: Album containing photographs and other items, compiled by Jean Thevenet, documenting his trip to Pago Pago, on the island of Tutuila, in American Samoa during his Pacific voyage on board the yacht 'Stella Polaris' in 1934. Photographs possibly taken by Thevenet. Includes captions. The album is numbered, but damage makes it difficult to know what the number is, probably "19". The pages are numbered 725 to 760. It forms part of a set, others of which are held at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa - Hamilton Library. The album is mainly comprised of scenes in Pago Pago, and images of local dancers, taken on 19 February 1934. Also contains two photographs of a building labelled 'Saddie Thomson Inn'. Album captions for these images read: "La Maison de 'Rain' (Somerset Maugham)". Also clippings of film productions of 'Rain' including pictures of Gloria Swanson.
