The first ones record his attendance at Jehovah's Witness meetings. Cahill was educated at Palmerston North Boys High School. Later in his life he farmed at East Cape. Description: A pamphlet urging voters in the Auckland Transport Board elections to vote for Communist Party members Rita Smith and Alex Rait, so that the Board allocates more money to the provision of trams rather than "tanks and tommy-guns". It also mentions the Police Offences Amendment Act whereby protesters against poor transportation could end up being arrested with no trial by jury. Front page shows two bystanders watching a tank moving down the street. One says to the other: "That's all that's left of the 5-10 to Onehunga". Quantity: 1 b&w photo-mechanical print(s). Description: Born in Wanganui, aged seven years when family moved to Gisborne where father was manager of a shoe store owned by Rees Jones. Spent two years at Teachers' Training College before enrolling to do Modern Dance at the University of California and Colombia University, New York for her second year. Describes how contemporary dance broke barriers of ballet and how it took off in universities, with reference to the work of Martha Graham. Mentions Hallie Flanagan who developed Federal Theatre Project for out-of-work actors. Mentions Living Newspaper Theatre which dealt with contemporary issues, especially the oppressed. Refers to other events which had a big effect - hearing Harry Bridges, Secretary of Coachworkers Union; racism in California and Klu Klux Klan in Miami. Returned to Gisborne in May 1939. Explains how she came to teach Physical Education at Woodford House and how she incorporated contemporary dance technique into the physical education programme. Later became Physical Welfare Officer for Physical Welfare Branch and outlines her career in this field, explaining how the `New Dance Group' came about and its reviews. Joined the Communist Party in 1948 and became involved with the Anti-Apartheid Movement and the 1951 Waterside Lockout. Married and had daughter Meg. Contracted Tuberculosis. Became involved with theatre and at the request of Nola Millar taught movement at Summer school at Massey in 1964. Describes Kinaesthetic Movement. Later worked at Drama School. Discusses differences between training actors and dancers. In 1950s worked with New Zealand Opera Company and comments on performance of Petrouscha by Douglas Wright. Discusses beginning of Drama School where she became tutor, 1970-1988. Description: Folded tabloid-size pamphlet, issued to the householder prior to the 1963 general election, shows a photograph of a woman pondering about New Zealand's economic conditions, rising cost of living and scarcity of job opportunities, poverty for older people, the threat of war, military expenditure, and lack of overseas markets. It discusses the huge profits made by the Chelsea Sugar Refining Company and Fletcher Holdings Ltd; the expenditure on frigates; the acquiescence to foreign capitalists' monopolies; capitalism as a cause of war. New Zealanders should protest against nuclear weapons, against war, racism, and against military pacts such as ANZUS and SEATO.
