Description: Typescript copy of journal written by William Franklin Browne between June 1885 and March 1888. The journal is a record of his activities as a teacher at a Native School in Whakatāne, written as if the content was intended to be reported to a higher authority. Reports children's attendance (and weather as it affects children's attendance), elections of and relations with the School Committee, relations with parents, difficulties with the condition of school buildings and his accommodation, school expenditure, and visits of School Inspectors. Includes a detailed account of his experience of the eruption of Mount Tarawera on 10 June 1886. The Library also holds William Franklin Browne's diary for 1881-1885 (MS-0332), biographical material about the Browne family (MSY-6836), the papers of William Franklin Browne's son, Theodore Percy Browne (MS-Papers-1394), and photographs of William Franklin Browne and his children (PAColl-4112). Description: Arthur Wilson was born in Auckland in 1868. Describes how his father, a builder by trade, went to Rotorua in 1872. Recalls being educated in an old whare on the side of Pukeroa Hill overlooking Ohinemutu. Talks about some of his fellow pupils. Mentions the Morrisons who ran the Rotorua Hotel and Dr Hope Lewis who owned the first home in Rotorua. Describes the stores at Ohinemutu which belonged to Thomas Wrigley, Harry Taylor, William Kelly and Charley and Willie Rogers. Describes how the Post Office and police station were built on the government reserve. Describes some schooling at Te Wairoa with Mr Haszard and at Tauranga District High School in 1883. Talks about his brothers and sisters Mary Jane, Kate, Eliza, William, Millie and Ellen Hinemoa. Mentions that William lived only a week and Ellen Hinemoa died at the age of two from falling into a hogshead of boiling water. Describes the boats that crossed Lake Tarawera and Harry Taylor's boats. Mentions Mokoia Island. Recalls Bishop Bennett at the mission at Te Mu, Te Wairoa. Mentions Ngati Hinemihi and Tuhourangi at Te Wairoa. Talks about the family owning the Terrace Hotel which had to be in the name of the brother in law, William Menzies.
