Description: Life history interviews with older residents of the Haast district in the South Island, many of whom are descended from the first Pakeha settlers who arrived in the 1870s and 1880s. Discusses living in an isolated area, medical emergencies, farming, fishing, deer shooting, local identities, schooling, the development of the air service and problems of getting in and out of the district. Interviews Betty Eggeling, Desmond Nolan, Bernard Cowan, Alan Cron, Mary Jones, Ruth (Ruby) Hill, Myra Cowan, Ted Buchanan, Henry Buchanan and Ann Mackey.
