Description: Photographs taken at the scene of the railway disaster at Tangiwai on Christmas Eve, 1953. Images of the train wreck and the rescue effort. Photographs taken by Morrie Peacock of 20th Century Photography (N.Z.) Limited. Original prints from these negatives are at PAColl-4975-1-01 On Christmas Eve, 1953, a surge of water, ice, volcanic ash and boulders from the crater lake of Mount Ruapehu carried away most of the Tangiwai railway bridge across the Whangaehu River. As a result, the engine, tender, and six carriages of the Wellington-to-Auckland night express plunged into the flooded river.
