Description: Green and companions travelling and climbing in Switzerland in 1870 and in 1874. Four views of County Kerry, Ireland, ca 1880. The early Swiss views include Chamounix, Mont Blanc, Jardin, the Road to Evolena, the Dent Blanche, the Briccola Alp, the Col d'Erin, Monte Rosa, the Adler Pass, the Faulberg, the Finster Aarhorn and the Wetterhorn, July - August 1870. The later Swiss views show fewer mountaineering scenes but include log cabins, Jungfrau, Schilthorn, Murren from the Lauterbrunn Valley, on the Sparrerhorn, and Natters. Two men called Peter [Lyle?] and [Henry?] Reid are singled out. The climbing was done with Swiss guides according to Green's diary. The Irish scenes, include Ballinskellig's Bay, Staigue Fort, the Coomeragh, and Landing the direct USA cable [on Valencia Island or Waterville, County Kerry, 1866?]. Quantity: 1 sketchbook(s). Description: Board game based on the Antarctic expedition of Admiral Byrd, consists of a map which follows Byrd on his trail by air, sea and land from Dunedin, New Zealand, to the South Pole avoiding the perils of icebergs, crevasses and blizzards along the route. Object of the game is to insert peg at bottom of microphone into die-cut holes at "New Zealand", spin the metal arrow on the microphone to determine the number of holes to advance, and start out for Admiral Byrd's Little America base. As players reach their destination they announce their safe arrival using the microphone and then continue on to the South Pole. The first player to reach the South Pole by exact count wins. Along the way, players encounter penguins, storm warnings, icebergs and crevasses. The box also contains an instruction sheet for the game, and a card advertising the game "Rook". Byrd's first Antarctic expedition took place 1928-1930. Some sources date this game at 1934, but at least one source gives 1930 eg Charles Dee Sharp's "The Wonder of American Toys 1920-1950", chapter 9. Quantity: 1 board game. Description: A six-panelled account of the deaths of 7 surveyors in Canterbury in the 1860s and 1885. They were Henry Whitcombe (mistakenly called George by the artist) who drowned while crossing the Teremakau River with Jacob Louper (correctly Lauper) in 1863; Carleton (correctly Charlton) Howitt and two others (Robert Little and Henry Miller) drowned in Lake Brunner in 1863, their packs found by the sole survivor, James Belgrave Hammett; Charles Townshend (correctly Townsend), drowned while crossing the Grey River in 1863; George Dobson, shot by the Maungatapu murderers in 1866; and Edward Lake Paske, who died in a snowstorm in the Clarence Valley in 1885 (correctly 1886), followed by another member of his party, Hugh Thompson who died in similar circumstances on the same trip. These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News.
