Description: The diary commences on 8 Jun 1856, the day of his arrival at Norfolk Island. It is kept in a yearbook from Norfolk's convict era, which Buffett apparently found in one of the abandoned buildings at Kingston. There is a gap between Sep 1860 and Mar 1868, when Buffett returned to Pitcairn, and between Oct 1872 and Oct 1875. After 1879, other hands appear in the writing, and the death of Buffett is recorded in 1891. Records shipping, births, marriages, deaths, weather, whale hunting and other events. Also includes hymn texts, a description of a dream, the laws and regulations of Pitcairn, recipes, poems, copies of letters and Commissariat details. John Buffett arrived on Pitcairn Island in the whaler `Cyrus' in 1823. He married Dorothy Young, daughter of Midshipman Edward Young, a `Bounty' mutineer. In 1856 Buffett moved to Norfolk Island with 193 other Pitcairners on the ship `Morayshire'. Quantity: 1 microfilm reel(s). Description: Shows a group of women and two men in sailor shirts in and around dwellings in a bush clearing. Two women are cooking an animal over a fire and another holds a child. One of the houses (the one on the right) has two storeys, and there is a rain barrel beside it. There is a precipice in the centre distance. Plate 141 in Domeny de Rienzi's book (but appears to be missing from ATL's French edition). Description: Collection comprises photographs, slides and negatives relating to education officer Murray Howse's time on Pitcairn Island with his family ca 1959-1962, and to his return as part of an archaeological team led by Peter Gathercole 1963-1964. Includes photographs taken in New Zealand which relate to Murray Howse's ongoing relationship with Pitcairn Islanders. Some images are captioned. Most images probably taken by Murray Howse, with some images taken by Alex Howse, Yoshiko Sinoto and other unidentified photographer(s), between 1959-1983. Chiefly shows images of the landscape and people of Pitcairn Island in daily life. Images include their crafts, social gatherings, the school, and contact by longboat with passenger ships. Scenes of interest include trips to Henderson and Oeno Islands, and the archaeological team dig on Pitcairn Island 1963-1964. Negative images chiefly show daily tasks. Views include the collection of bananas, various buildings, men carrying a longboat downhill, Bounty Bay landing point, women with wheelbarrows made from Oeno Island cabbage trees, a man with a staff, a 'Welcome to Pitcairn Island' sign, a hula group and male choir performance, and the gravestone of John Adams. One set of negative images show a television set broadcasting scenes taken on Pitcairn Island. One set of negative strips show Japanese anthropologist Yoshiko Sinoto on his dig site at Bill's ground circa 1971, and the pearl scraper found by Murray Howse in a Henderson Island cave. Original housing of these two strips noted the scraper is "on loan to Otago Museum and is property of Gary Howse after me". Some negative images relate to prints in this collection.
