Reference: B-064-032-1

Description: Shows mountainous bush-covered coast in right background, and 3-masted sail-steam ship in middle distance at left. Geographic location dubious. Pacific Ocean does not border on Leeward Islands. However Sombrero Island is one of the Leeward Islands according to Times atlas. Other possible locations could be near the Straits of Magellan, or other Pacific locations. (19th century atlas locates a Baker Island as part of the Gilbert & Ellice group). Mounted on same sheet as B-064-032-2: "Chincha Islands off Peru, Pacific Ocean; visited 1878". Other Titles - Smyths. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - PACIFIC. O.; Recto - bottom centre - SOMBRERO Is. / SMYTH'S Channel / BAKER's Is:/3000 St; Recto - bottom right - HS (monogram) / 12. 12. 81 (or 91).; (On backing sheet, now detached): The Entrance from the Pacific / to Smiths Channel / 12 Dececr 1881 Date could be 1881 or 1891. If this depicts the Pacific, the Navy list records of Scrivener's career suggest that the year is 1881. However, he was on board ship in North America and the West Indies in 1890-91. Sombrero Island, is in the West Indies. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, 129 x 176 mm, mounted on sheet 305 x 387 mm. Provenance: Purchased at auction at Sotheby's, London, in 1988.
