Description: View of Waipawa, taken between ca 1876 by Herbert Deveril of Wellington. In the foregound may be seen two men with a horse. In the background are the railway bridge and town. Original caption reads: "8. Waipawa, Provincial District of Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. Pastoral country through which runs the Napier-Manawatu Railway. The bridge over the river has a total length of 1,495 feet, comprising 24 spans of 60 feet, two of 14 feet 6 inches and two of 13 feet. The roadway, having a clear width of 12 feet, is carried on the 60-feet spans between the combined trusses, the lower chords and tension rods being of wrought iron; the lower members of New Zealand timbers; the piers of totara piles. The bridge was completed 1st September 1876. It was designed by John Carruthers, Esq, Engineer-in-Chief of New Zealand, and built by Mr Donald Ross, contractor." Description: Panoramic view showing an angled view of the Tarawera Hot Springs Hotel, a two-storeyed wooden building. There is a fire escape on the corrugated iron side wall on the right leading down from upstairs windows. Verandahs along the front, seen on the left angle; gas lamp in a corner of the upstairs verandah. Driveway from the right, and there are two young women sitting on a lawn with a car [number plate: WN-1949] parked between them and the hotel. Six people are standing out the front, two of them women (one of whom is holding a small dog or cat in her arms). Man on a horse has two dogs beside him in the centre of the image. Description: Two menus with identical printed menu but each with a different watercolour vignette at the top. The menus are on folded light card so that it could stand on a table. The vignette on one card is signed M.M. and shows two horses, Erin-go-bragh and Rip Van. Rip Van is bucking its rider into midair. The other menu shows a vignette of three red-jacketed riders seen from the back, riding off into the sunset. Date estimated from the dates at which Hart & Company, Hastings printers, are listed in Wises directories. Quantity: 2 watercolour(s). Description: Shows Marion Sim, wife of John Sim, feeding horses. The public house, or hotel was run by brothers John and Andrew Sim. Exhibited in 'Two centuries of New Zealand landscape art' Exhibition at Auckland City Art Gallery, 2 February - 22 April 1990. Exhibited in 'Treasures in Trust' exhibition to celebrate 75th anniversary of the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1995. According to N.Z. Historic Places, no. 46, Dec 1993, p. 17 "There has been a public house at Mohaka since 1859 or before. The first was established by John and Marion Sim on the south side of the mouth of the Mohaka river, opposite the large Maori community centred round the Te Huke and Hiruharama Pa. In 1859, when the postal service was established between Napier and Wairoa, the pub was already there. The Sims were running a ferry and operated the post office from the pub.
