Description: Interview with Eddie (Edgar) Tredrea, born in New Plymouth in 1917. Talks about his experience at TEAL (Tasman Empire Airlines Limited) and Air New Zealand. Refers to starting work for TEAL in 1946 after he was dischared from the Air Force where he had been flying Catalinas. Comments on flying various flying boats before transferring to land planes when DC6s were introduced in 1954, and later flying Lockheed Electras, DC8s and DC10s. Discusses his career in training and the development of flight safety systems, beginning with writing check lists and duty manuals for each crew member, and the introduction of full training manuals with the DC6s. Refers to becoming training captain for DC6s and Electras. Discusses lengths of runways, tyres, stall speeds, wind sheer and all-weather landings. Comments on the development of landing procedures with respect to rate of descent, checking altimeters, speed, alert systems, and collision avoidance systems. Mentions that the technical requirements became more complicated with the introduction of jets, and the development of cockpit safety procedures for all new aircraft. Discusses developments in equipment and instruments to aid landing particularly electronic aids. Talks about training pilots in simulators and being a simulator instructor for DC10s. Refers to visits to Los Angeles to work on procedures to fly DC8s in and out of American fields. Talks about various accidents and their causes, including the Erebus disaster. Describes evaluating aircraft operations in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, including landing systems, organisation, engineering, building runways on ice surfaces, and reporting requirements for planes in whiteouts. Mentions his advisory role for the upgrading of aiports at Wellington and Nadi, being technical director of Auckland Airport planning in the 1960s, and the politics of runway extension. Reflects on serving on various international bodies concerned with aircraft safety and operation and the refinement of safety procedures over the years.
