Description: Photograph of hypnotist Francis Harry Quinn, known as the Great Franquin (third from left), and his sister Laurel Quinn (Franquin) (right) with two unidentified men, possibly jazz musicians or vaudeville performers, taken circa 1950s by Photo Services of 12 Belfield Street, Timaru. Each of the people pictured has signed their name below the image of themselves; the unidentified men's first names appear to be George and Bob. Title supplied by Library. Description: Partial poster in four surviving sections advertises a show by the Indian magician K Lal. It shows the magician in a turban at the right, the face of a magician in the centre, an erect ape or man in a monkey suit at the left, and a prostrate woman sawn apart at the waist. The background shows a city skyline. The printing technique suggests a date from the 1940-1950s. However, other posters held by the Library are tentatively dated ca 1969. Provenance: Previously part of American Norm Nielsen's collection of magic posters. Nielsen acquired some of his collection from the family of New Zealander Charles Cabot, and this one may have had originally have been collected by Cabot. The Library has a large collection donated directly to the Library from Cabot's widow in 1978.
