Description: Album of photographs mostly of towns and buildings in Canterbury and Otago, chiefly taken by the Burton Brothers, circa 1880s. They all show city scenes including street views, and images of important buildings. The buildings include church buildings, bank buildings, insurance company office buildings, and hotels (both exterior and interior views of the Grand Hotel, Dunedin). In the North Island, there is a view of the Auckland Synagogue, and a view of Taratahi Homestead, the home of Lady Tancred and Sir Thomas Tancred, in the Carterton District. Description: A view of the Dominican priory, designed by Francis Petre and built in 1877. The image is taken from the corner of Smith and Rattray Streets, and the edge of the neighbouring St Joseph's Cathedral, also designed by Petre, can be seen on the left Petre was influenced in his design of the building by Anglo-Saxon architecture. The priory was the largest un-reinforced concrete building in the southern hemisphere at the time. Description: This collection contains the microfilm printouts of two letters and the typed translations of these. One letter is from Rev Father Moreau in Dunedin to Very Rev Father Yardin, dated 27 October 1869 and concerns the appointment of Rev Norris to the Dunedin Diocese. The other letter is from the Society of Mary in Lyon, dated 3rd May 1872 deploring the disagreement between Father Moreau and Monsignor Moran, on the departure of the missionaries from Dunedin.
