Doyle, Martin, 1956- :[Chinese chicken inferno]. 4 June 2013

Date: 2013

From: Doyle, Martin Maurice Michael Thomas, 1956- :Digital cartoons

By: Scoop (Firm); Salient (Newspaper)

Reference: DCDL-0025101

Description: Three men are featured in this cartoon, the third character along begins by saying "Good news, comrades! - 119 workers burnt alive but all poultry flesh has been salvaged - ..." He is referring to the fatal fire at a chicken processing plant in Jilin, China on 3 June 2013, which killed at least 119 of its workers. Most of the exits were said to be blocked which led to many of the deaths. The character then goes on to put a positive spin on the accident by referring to imminent job vacancies in what he refers to as "an exciting growth sector of China's economy!". The first character [which may represent the factory owners] says "Phew! Lucky we didn't fowl it up by providing escape routes and smoke alarms for the workers". The middle man says "Time for a solid half-arsed inquiry" which may be a reference to New Zealand's Pike Mine disaster and subsequent inquiry. Accompanying note from cartoonist states 'Addresses the fatal fire at the chicken processing plant in Jilin, China, that resulted in the deaths of 119 workers. Just as at Pike River, NZ, insufficient warnings mechanisms were in place and no safe way for the workers to escape the blaze. After the chicken inferno in Jilin, you have to wonder where exactly people fit in the "People's Republic".' Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).
