Description: Interview with Raymond Boyce about his albums of photographs and sketches from his career in the performing arts. Photographs mainly cover performances and set construction, and sketches are of set and costume designs. Photographs mostly taken by John Ashton. The themes of the four albums are: Theatre album : Refers to toy theatre collection including two Pollock's theatres being inspired by childhood trip to Pollock's Toyshop in Hockston, North East London with his grandmother. Talks about working on New Zealand Players productions with Dick Campion, Director, Anna Quash, Wardrobe Mistress, and Geraldine Boyce, Wife and Props Maker. Refers to working with Edith Campion, and British actors Barbara Jefford and Keith Mitchell. Tells of training as puppeteer with British Puppet and Model Theatre Guild and working with John Wright Marionette Theatre in England. Tells of creating sets and costumes for 'The Lady's Not For Burning' 1954, 'Young Elizabeth' 1953, 'Ring Around The Moon' 1953, Ned Kelly 1953. Tells of first play he did with his New Zealand Puppet Company 1957. Tells of work as Executive Designer for the New Zealand Pavilion for Expo 70 in Japan. Talks about designing the Globe Theatre Hangings commissioned by Wellington Shakespeare Society 1986, working with Dawn Sanders and Cath de Forge, President of the Embroiders Guild, to persuade their 500 members to stitch the tapestry curtains. Mentions New Zealander Andrew Gerr was Chairman of the Globe Theatre Research and Education Committee. Tells of bad experience working with Paris Opera ballet mistress on 'Coppelia' in 1996. Tells of basing design for Poul Gnatt's Royal New Zealand Ballet production of 'Napoli' 1962 on Danish original. Recounts story of planks used as thunder makers going through Napier theatre stage floor in technical rehearsal. Tells of designing Paul Klee style backdrop for 'Prismatic Variations' 1960, painted by Will Conroy, State Opera House scenic painter. Tells how his designs for 'Facade' were used to persuade Sir Fredrick Ashton to allow them to design a new decor for the ballet. Recalls 'Giselle' ballet 1965 and that visiting Russian prima ballerina Svetlana Beriosova had wardrobe mistress Nancy Seaton make her costumes. Tells of his designs for 'Alice In Wonderland' being used to persuade Minister of Arts to fund it. Mentions designing costumes, writing and selecting music for 'Cinderella' 1969. Talks about designing sets for various productions of 'Carmen', with Dick Campion and Kiri Te Kanawa at Old St James Theatre, Auckland 1968, with Russell Kerr at Canterbury Opera 1994 and for touring Sadlers Wells Opera production with Joyce Blackman and Anthony Vest. Tells of projecting scenery in 'The Rakes Progress', and using raked stage in 'Il Travatore'. Says he designed some operas 3 or 4 times such as 'La Boheme' and 'Madam Butterfly' and how it came out differently each time. From the right hand tower a witch or wizard trains a telescope on a red-jacketed soldier, and beneath the parapet, Punch the jester pokes his head out of a shuttered opening.
