Mercer Museum oral history project

Description: An oral history project relating to the township of Mercer, Waikato. Project records memories of the township and surrounding areas from people who lived there in the mid twentieth century. Collection comprises 15 oral history interviews conducted by interviewer Megan Hutchings: six in-depth interviews, and nine short interviews carried out during a Mercer Museum open day on 14 March 2015. Also known as "Mercer the four R’s – Stories of the river, railway, Roose’s and rowing". Six in depth interviews are with interviewees: Peggy Bourne, Neil Carey, Norm Cox, Reg Douglas, Bob Hills, Jeanette Thomas. Nine brief interviews from the Museum's Open Day with interviewees: Bernie Morey, Brien Golding, Dorrie and David Carr, Elaine Tatton, Gary Tetzlaff, Joanna and George Katipa, Patt Carr, Roger Laloli, and Wilfred Waller. The Jeanette Roose Charitable Trust received a New Zealand Oral History Award grant in 2014 on behalf of the Mercer Art & History Museum as funding for this project. Copies of this oral history project are held at the Mercer Art and History Museum. The development of Mercer as a town is linked to the Roose family who ran many businesses in the area, and to the trade on the Waikato River and extension of railway lines to the township.The Mercer Art and History Museum, which showcases the history of Mercer, was established in the memory of Caesar Roose by his daughter Jeanette Thomas. Description: Electronic scans of black and white photographs showing scenes taken in parks, farms, and gardens. Taken between 1966 and 1975 by Max Oettli. Includes photographs taken in Auckland Region: the fountain in Albert Park, youth at 'Jumping Sunday' in Albert Park 1969; familes picnicking, the Wintergardens, and lotus leaves on a pond, Auckland Domain; the underside of the wharf in Herne Bay; native bush, Kauri tree trunks, Titirangi; gravestones in Grafton Cemetery; Grey Lynn Park; trees in Myers Park; and people throwing peanuts for a monkey in a zoo cage [probably Auckland Zoo]. Includes photographs taken in Waikato Region: a field of cows (taken from a moving train); an elderly couple in the vegetable garden of their house, Frankton; and two women driving their trotting sulkies down a country road. Includes scenes taken on Great Barrier Island showing Michael Volkering, Rene Wilson, Margery Corneau, and Virginia Edmone tramping in the rain, hanging out at a hut, and Volkering standing inside a fenced plot. Includes photographs showing: a letterbox labelled 'P.Garden' in a field; nasturtiums (taken at Ohope); shadowy trees (taken at Rotorua); Suzy Reid lying on a slope of long grass; a kiwi symbol and commemorative plaque for NZI Insurance on a watergarden rock wall; and a Citroen Light 15 car (owned by Tony Haszard) and a cloud reflection (taken through a car sun visor).
