Purdon, Mary, fl 1920s :Photograph album of a visit to Ovalau, Fiji
Date: 1928
By: Purdon, Mary, active 1920s
Reference: PA1-o-1273
Description: The album opens with a panoramic view of Ovalau seen from the deck of an approaching ship. Much of the album contains views of the town of Levuka which in some detail show buildings, businesses, steets, parks, a sportsfield, the waterfront, the clock tower of Levuka Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, Victoria Memorial Hall, and Lautoka sugar mill. There are a number of images of traditional Fijian villages, many of them named, with traditional thatched buildings. Snaps of village life include children playing, fishers at work or resting, men in canoes equiped with matting sails, an oven being prepared for use, people being summoned to church by the sound of a wooden drum, women carrying bedding material, weaving mats and dressed for a traditional dance. Other Fijian occupations depicted are men and boys harvesting coconuts, Fijian hawkers carrying produce in woven containers hung from poles carried over their shoulders, and Fijian policemen. Photographs, probably for tourists, of young Fijian men and women have titles such as "Native Chief," "Native Belle," and "Types of Native Women." Also in this category of photograph, but identified for what they are are Fijian nurses, Girl guides, and a girls choir located in Levuka. There is one photograph of the tomb built in 1926 over Bishop Vidal's grave at Cawaci near Levuka where there is a Roman Catholic mission school and church. Of the ships depicted, only the "Sir John Forrest" and the "Adi Keva" are named. On the inside of the back cover a partly obscured inscription reads "Copyright pictures. All photographs in this album taken by Chapman (the rest can't be read)." Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Provenance: Purchase
